One of the Forresters, our brother, Ancak Wardana, who is the Director of WALHI – an Indonesian environmental NGO – is going to the UK to pursue his Master Degree in Law.

He is a living sample of the youth, who has a strong vision of his homeland, Bali, particularly, in terms of the environment. We are so proud to have a Balinese like him. This farewell party was made to send him off with a spirit of brotherhood & sisterhood.

We started with this very funny, sarcastic movie from Sacha Baron Cohen, who is more famous as Ali G, or Borat entitled BARON. You should see this movie, it’s hilarious!!

As the choice of the rest of the movies were up to the crowd, after several tries, we finally came up with a melancholy movie – almost shed us tears (thank God it was dark), AUGUST RUSH.

We had a good, simple, yet touching fraternities & sororities party.

Absurditas Dunia Betina

TEMPO Interaktif, Jakarta: Perempuan semampai itu mendekat ke arah kandang, ke arah Dewa. Perlahan, dibukanya satu per satu kancing blusnya hingga akhirnya ia terbebas dari kungkungan. Setelah penutup dadanya tanggal, berahinya pun meledak tak terkendali. Ia lupa pada siapa atau pada apa tepatnya berahi itu disalurkan. Dewa bukanlah manusia berjenis kelamin, yang dengan gagah perkasa siap melayani libidonya. Dewa adalah seekor sapi jantan berwarna hitam pekat, satu-satunya teman yang dimiliki Betina (Kinaryosih).

Scene yang sensual itu muncul dalam film perdana Lola Amaria. Film itu, Betina, adalah film yang bercerita mengenai kehidupan orang-orang “sakit”. Betina adalah perempuan yang tumbuh dan besar di sebuah desa antah berantah. Sejak kecil, ia harus kehilangan kasih sayang ayahnya (Zairin Zain), seorang anggota militer. Gara-gara menulis buku bertajuk NKRI Bukan Tuhan, sang ayah diculik. Hingga Betina menjadi perempuan dewasa, sang ayah tak pernah diketahui rimbanya.

Tak hanya ia yang terguncang oleh kepergian sang ayah yang begitu tiba-tiba. Ibu Betina (Tutie Kirana) juga begitu terpukul hingga nalarnya ikut terguncang. Setelah kehilangan kasih sayang seorang ayah, Betina sekaligus kehilangan ibunya. Sehari-hari, pekerjaan ibu Betina hanyalah mencuci dan menyetrika seragam militer suaminya. Tak dihiraukannya sang anak yang mulai tumbuh menjadi gadis ranum.

Dunia “sakit” Betina semakin diperparah dengan perlakuan tak senonoh yang ia terima dari Juragan Ternak Sapi (Otig Pakis) dan kerabat Betina sendiri, Luta (Subur Sukirman). Namun, Betina tak pernah berkata-kata. Seluruh kesedihan dan kemarahan ia pendam begitu saja. Hingga suatu saat, panah cinta merasuk ke dalam hatinya yang telah lama beku. Sayang, sang pujaan hati adalah Penghulu Kematian (Agatsya Kandou). Artinya, hanya kematian demi kematianlah yang dapat mempertemukan Betina dengan pria itu. Bila perlu, kematian ibunya sendiri.

Tak banyak berbeda dengan dua film yang sebelumnya diproduseri Lola, Beth dan Novel tanpa Huruf R, film yang diproduksi sejak 2004 ini berusaha membawa penonton ke “dunia berbeda”. Hampir tak ada dialog dalam film berdurasi 70 menit ini. Sekiranya ada, hanyalah dialog-dialog tak penting yang tak akan membawa penonton ke mana pun.

Pengaruh sang mentor, Arya Kusumadewa, seperti diakui Lola, muncul dalam film ini. Kendati begitu, Lola berkilah, “Film ini masih ada romantisnya, sedangkan karya Arya sama sekali tidak.” Aroma surealisme pekat terasa meski Lola mengklaim film ini realis. Banyak hal dalam film ini yang tidak sejalan dengan realitas dunia sehari-hari kita, apalagi masih ditambah minimnya dialog. Bahkan, tanpa membaca sinopsis, kemungkinan besar penonton akan mengalami kesulitan memahami Betina dan pergolakan batinnya.

Setting waktu dan tempat sedari awal menjadi sebuah pertanyaan besar. Bila menyaksikan visualisasi Betina, penonton seperti dibawa mundur dengan mesin waktu. Lokasinya pun tampak antah berantah, yang diperkuat dengan simbol-simbol, seperti kuburan segi tiga yang sulit ditemukan di dunia nyata. Tapi lagu Bang Thoyibdan Only You, yang diputar radio, menjadikan film ini rancu, kapan dan di bagian negeri Indonesia manakah Betina menghirup napasnya.

Kostum juga menjadi masalah sendiri. Pakaian-pakaian Betina, meski lusuh, tampak sensual untuk ukuran seorang gadis yang tinggal di desa. Sayang sekali banyak detail yang tak tergarap rapi untuk sebuah film yang memakan masa produksi hingga dua tahun ini. Bagian terbaik dari sekian banyak kelemahan film ini di antaranya terletak pada akting Kinaryosih. Ia dengan cemerlang mampu menerjemahkan absurditas dunia Betina kepada penonton.

Q! Film Festival entered the scene since 2002, the first ever in Indonesia, to provide events that encourage interaction, educ ate people and mainstream the issues related to homosexuality through the language of visuals and other mainstream tools.

Growing over a period of six years, the OFF now travels to five separate regions (Jakarta. Bandung. Jogjak arta, Surabaya and Bali) and has become the largest and most successful film festival of its kind in Asia .

The prestigious Teddy Awards — a queer chapter o(the Berlin Film Festival — agreed to affiliate with QFF m2006 So, QFF now one of the official “TEDDY AWARD on Tour” programs and also acknowledged as one of the international film festivals circuit.
The media and popular culture often present comic al stereotypes of homo-sexuals, so young people encounter few role models of LGBTIQ people who are open, confident and successful in their fields. The pressures to conform or hide an important aspect of one’s identity can lead to psychological problems, especially amongst youth who are grappling to understand their own sexuality. The outcome, all too often, is that they seek an outlet in drugs, alcohol and other hedonistic and unhealthy lifestyle choices.

On August 10, Monday. Q Literature will launch a translation book The Gay Archipelago by Tom Boellstorf. The extensive years of research from Boellstorf for his PhD thesis had made a fruitful result on the social-anthropology point of view of the Indonesian queer people.
Coinciding with the 9 International Conference on AIDS of Asia Pacific (ICAAP) in Bali, the Q! Film Festival will be held from 7 to 13 August.

Outside the stadium, a couple of men try to catch a glimpse of the game through the fence. They are not allowed into the stadium today. A year’s hard work has preceded this event – but in the end, after overcoming countless obstacles, the game will actually take place. Here, the desire for self-determination and justice erupts – and one thing is clear : change is possible.

Soup Chat & The Three Stooges-Screening : 17 March’09

Soup Chat #24 was held at forrestClub, hosted by Ridwan and Chika starting at 5 to 7 PM.

The appetizer was tomato soup by Made Waters, followed by main course:

first one by Monez, who talked about Monez Illustration,

and second, by Lita & Angga: Lomography, what the hell this cute-tiny camera made by the Russians is.

This day was also their 2nd anniversary….therefore a chocolate cake came for all attendees.

And by 9-10:30 PM (just in time before the rain started pouring)… as usual, this month’s movie we picked was the Three Stooges. Though hardly we could remember when we last saw this movie… we still laugh so hard at Moe, Larry and Curly’s slapstick jokes..

The Three Stooges was an American vaudeville and comedy act of the early to mid–20th century best known for their numerous short subject films. Their hallmark was physical slapstick comedy punctuated by quickly-delivered one-liners, within outrageous story lines.

On the day that Hurricane Katrina hits New Orleans, elderly Daisy Williams nee Fuller is on her deathbed in a New Orleans hospital. At her side is her adult daughter, Caroline. Daisy asks Caroline to read to her aloud the diary of Daisy’s lifelong friend, Benjamin Button. Benjamin’s diary recounts his entire extraordinary life, the primary unusual aspect of which was his aging backwards, being born an old man who was diagnosed with several aged diseases at birth and thus given little chance of survival, but who does survive and gets younger with time. Abandoned by his biological father, Thomas Button, after Benjamin’s biological mother died in childbirth, Benjamin was raised by Queenie, a black woman and caregiver at a seniors home. Daisy’s grandmother was a resident at that home, which is where she first met Benjamin. Although separated through the years, Daisy and Benjamin remain in contact throughout their lives, reconnecting in their forties when in age they finally match up. Some of the revelations in Benjamin’s diary are difficult for Caroline to read, especially as it relates to the time past this reconnection between Benjamin and Daisy, when Daisy gets older and Benjamin grows younger into his childhood years.
